Intelligences Artificielles
Artificial Intelligences

Not a day goes by without news stories about artificial intelligence entities gaining autonomy. The prospect of a superintelligence – synonymous with the independence and misalignment with – is gradually sliding from classic science-fiction narratives towards a programmed.

Cinema has been exploring this contemporary anxiety for some time. The original narrative must be attributed to Stanley Kubrick, the visionary director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which Hal, the machine, cuts loose from humans. The threat was abstract, almost philosophical at that time and it was not until James Cameron or Ridley Scott that it became tangible. The Terminator, a modest B-movie action film carried by an Austrian bodybuilder, permeated the collective imagination and pop culture with the idea of a machine uprising and a programmed apocalypse.

Artificial Intelligences focuses on all these stories in which artificial intelligence breaks free from its subservient role to take control of human destiny. From spy films to teen movies, from sentimental auteur films built around a voice, to the mythical science-fiction narratives of Japanese animation, cinema has successfully mirrored our fears and anxieties.

La Nuit Excentrique
Eccentric Night

Listen up all you lovely night-owls! The Festival’s traditional Eccentric Night dreamed up by the Cinémathèque française – that renowned repository for off-the-wall movies – is back with a few new gems on 35mm, presented in French vintage style versions. In this selection, which is guaranteed not to include a Palme d’or, you’ll not only see zombies, metalheads and Nazis partying in a symbiosis that’s a treat for the soul but also a generous African princess in what is not a documentary about the 1973 oil crisis and, finally, a ninja sporting a very 1970s moustache facing down an untamed shrew who’s not the type to give up her seat to a pregnant woman on the Strasbourg tram! To help the survivors recover from this offbeat marathon, which will also include a few delightful, guaranteed period-authentic trailers, breakfast will be served at dawn, as the icing on the shuriken.

Fabrice Du Welz

A Belgian filmmaker profoundly affected by his experience of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Fabrice du Welz has been associated with a new wave of French-language horror cinema since the late 1990s. Since the success of his first feature, Calvaire, a surrealistic odyssey, he has been continually expected to deliver in the realm of horror but he will never stop defying that expectation. A genuine auteur, the Brussels-born director has built a career on the fringes of genre cinema, but one undeniably marked by an obsession with deviant couples and their destructive passions. Deeply rooted in his home region, he created the Ardennes trilogy, a nightmarish study of lost souls on the road to perdition. Recently, his work has taken a more political turn as he aspires to direct a new trilogy exploring Belgium’s feelings of guilt, which began with the highly ambitious film Maldoror. Fabrice du Welz is more than a filmmaker. Today, he teaches acting for the camera, weighs in with other directors and actors on Belgian television and has ventured into documentaries with a fascinating film about Pier Paolo Pasolini.
