Sur les chemins tortueux qui bordent la mer Noire, une femme donne naissance à un enfant qui défie toute logique naturelle. Abandonnée par son compagnon épouvanté, elle se retrouve seule à protéger et nourrir cette créature à peine humaine, dans une maison délabrée et face à une société qui ne lui offre qu’indifférence ou prédation masculine. À mesure que les besoins de l’enfant se font plus dévorants, l’amour maternel se mue en un dévouement absolu qui confine à la folie.

Le film peut s’appréhender comme une allégorie des inégalités patriarcales dans la société turque contemporaine, la créature révélant la détermination insoupçonnée d’une femme face à un monde hostile.

On a winding road along the Black Sea coast, a woman gives birth to a child that is not at all normal. Abandoned by her horrified partner, she finds herself alone in a dilapidated house, having to protect and nurture this barely human creature and having to cope in a community where she finds only indifference or predatory men. As the child’s needs become all-consuming, maternal love transforms into an absolute devotion that borders on madness.

The film can be seen as an allegory of patriarchal inequalities in contemporary Turkish society, with the creature revealing a woman’s unsuspected determination in the face of a hostile world.
