Winslow Leach, compositeur et interprète talentueux mais victime d’un producteur machiavélique, entreprend de se venger. Sa quête est motivée par sa fascination pour une jeune chanteuse prénommée Phoenix.

Brian De Palma s’inspire du roman de Gaston Leroux Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, pour conjuguer cinéma et opéra, dans une œuvre folle construite autour d’une partition rock unique. Le cinéaste évoque -là le destin de l’artiste dépossédé de son œuvre, mais c’est bien la bande-originale de Paul Williams qui aura érigé le film en objet culte. Il sera projeté à l’Opéra national du Rhin, dans le cadre des Journées européennes du patrimoine. Une séance qui allie un lieu d’exception à une œuvre absolument mémorable.

Brian De Palma draws inspiration from Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera to blend cinema and opera in a wild film built around a unique rock score. He explores the fate of the artist dispossessed of his work, but it is very much Paul Williams’ original soundtrack that elevated the film to cult status. It will be shown at the Opéra national du Rhin as part of European Heritage Days, a screening that combines an exceptional venue with an absolutely memorable film
