En 1870, dans le Wisconsin, le shérif et pasteur d’une petite ville d’immigrants est appelé pour donner les derniers sacrements à un vagabond. L’histoire prend un tour tragique lorsque le médecin reconnaît chez l’homme les symptômes de la diphtérie. La petite communauté va devoir affronter une épidémie mortelle mais aussi un feu de forêt qui ne cesse de gagner du terrain.

Pour son premier long métrage, la réalisatrice Dara Van Dusen conjugue le western américain avec le récit apocalyptique, à la portée quasi biblique. Profondément naturaliste dans son approche d’une époque et d’un mode de vie, A Prayer for the Dying aborde le destin des colons avec un terrible fatalisme.

The story turns tragic when the doctor notices the dying man has symptoms of diphtheria. The small community is facing not only a deadly epidemic, but also a wildfire that continues to spread.

For her debut feature, director Dara Van Dusen blends the American western with an apocalyptic narrative of almost biblical proportions. Deeply naturalistic in its portrayal of an era and a way of life, A Prayer for the Dying explores the fate of the settlers with a sense of grim fatalism.
