An archeology of the future

La décennie des années 1960 s’achève à la façon d’un crépuscule : fin des illusions et des utopies, fin de l’opulence et des idéologies, fin des perspectives ouvertes par le progrès et la technologie… Le cinéma se sert alors de la science-fiction pour documenter une époque hantée par le spectre de la catastrophe. Entre 1968 et 1976, de nombreux films sondent un abîme dont nous ne cessons d’éprouver de nos jours la terrible force visionnaire. Revoir ces films, c’est sentir à quel point demain nous avait déjà été raconté hier.

The 1960s faded out in the twilight: drawing a curtain on its illusions, its utopias, its opulence and ideologies. It also saw the end of our faith in the power of progress and technology… For filmmakers, science fiction became a means to document an era haunted by the spectre of catastrophe. Between 1968 and 1976, many films plumbed the depths of an abyss whose terrifying visionary power remains equally potent today. Watching these prophetic films now, decades later, makes us realise how much of the future was already foreseen back then.
