In 1347, a servant flees the castle after cuckolding his master. A convent takes him in on condition that he pretend to be a deaf mute to discourage all temptation.
It’s Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll in the medieval nunnery! But beneath the surface of this extravagant comedy and its cougar nuns, Baena is pointing to a more sombre reality with historical roots. Few convent nuns were there by choice or conviction, and thus really did engage in sexual transgressions in what Baena calls “hot beds of sin”. The Little Hours is loosely inspired by Boccaccio’s The Decameron , but thematically it’s also a distant cousin to Ken Russell’s’ The Devils .
