THELMA

A widely acclaimed director since the critical success of the brilliant Oslo , August 31st and the poignant Back Home , Joaquim Trier tries his hand at a genre film. Thelma marks a return to his native Norway to tell the story of a student who falls in love only to discover she has supernatural powers. Assisted by his usual co-scriptwriter, and in no way renouncing sensibilities, Trier shifts directions by making a thriller tinged with supernatural elements. He also remains committed to showing strong characters at odds with their environment. Making skilful use of genre in Thelma to suit his purposes, Trier continues, film by film, to build a coherent body of work.
