Maître du huis clos et esthète du CinémaScope, le cinéaste américain reprend la trame du film original, scénarisé par Howard Hawks (non crédité au générique), pour livrer un classique du cinéma fantastique : une œuvre à la fois paranoïaque et tétanisante. Habituellement compositeur des musiques de ses propres films, Carpenter confie cette fois la bande-son à Ennio Morricone.

A master of the contained thriller and CinemaScope aesthetics, he takes up the storyline of the original film, scripted by Howard Hawks (uncredited), to deliver a classic of fantastic cinema, a paranoid and benumbing work. Carpenter habitually composes his own music, but this time assigns it to Ennio Morricone.
