In spite of severe technical problems that would be just as difficult today, Spielberg delivered a blockbuster masterpiece and one of the most influential films of all time. As for the elusive shark, with the dark depthless mouth, he turns 50 this year and has rightfully earned a place in the bestiary of great filmic beings, next to Godzilla and King Kong.
