Terry Gilliam : Guest of Honour

We are very pleased to announce that world-renowned film maker Terry Gilliam, will be the guest of honour at the 16th Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival.

 

He will receive an outstanding achievement award for his canon of work at the opening ceremony on Friday 22 September, to be followed by a master class on Sunday 24 September.

There will also be a retrospective of his films throughout the Festival.

After graduating in political science from Occidental College in Los Angeles, Gilliam moved to New York where he became the assistant editor of Help! magazine and a freelance cartoonist. In 1967, he left the United States to start a new life in England, where he worked as an animator. The only American member of The Monty Python Flying Circus, his name first appeared on the silver screen in 1975 in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

His filmography is composed of fantastical worlds and anticipation films, which cast a critical eye on society: Jabberwocky, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Münchausen, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Brothers Grimm, Tideland, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Zero Theorem, the short film The Wholly Family and after 30 years in the making, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

 

He has also directed operas, such as Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust at the English National Opera, as well as Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini, and is the author of Gilliamesque, his pre-posthumous memoirs.
