Kaleb is nearly thirty and struggling to find his place in life. A lover of exotic animals, he brings a spider into his flat. The creature escapes and chaos gradually spreads throughout the building. A housing-project movie or a monster film, Vermin succeeds on both counts. Sébastien Vaniček portrays realistic characters entangled in a horrific situation, in a particularly anxiety-provoking huis clos setting. French cinema struggles to produce effective monster films, but Vermin has the potential to be a landmark, due to its carefully crafted script and ability to traumatise arachnophobes.
