In a society that has eliminated all forms of violence, governments have been careful to retain an outlet for aggression: rollerball, a sport that combines elements of American football, boxing and hockey. But when the sport’s greatest champion is threatened by the organisers, he goes from obedience to insurrection. Norman Jewison’s film anticipates the rise of spectator sports: modern-day gladiator games designed to entertain the masses. Rollerball is a vividly memorable, visually arresting work.
