A beautiful young nurse is hired by a wealthy sugar plantation owner in the Carib bean to help care for Jessica, his catatonic wife, ostensibly ill from a tropical fever. But when she arrives on the island, heavily steeped in Voodoo culture, the cause of Jessica’sillness is less certain. Lewton based his story on that of Jane Eyre, in this emotionally intense film about guilt, possession, manipulation and redemption through death, all the more enhanced by the Voodoo ceremonies and music.
