Two sisters: Mary, sheltered and innocent, and Jacqueline, flamboyant, enigmatic, in love with death. Jacqueline goes missing and Mary sets off for New York to look for her. She encounters a hodgepodge of characters that offer to help her find her sister. There are many red herrings, false friends and contradictions in this film constructed like a detective thriller and finally, an oppressive and lonely world begins to close in on Mary. Many consider this dark and nihilistic film to be Lewton’s masterpiece. Its chilling shower scene that prefigures Psycho was probably seen by Hitchcock, at RKO at the same time as Lewton
