1978: in a Kurdish village on the eve of the Iranian revolution, a young woman appears to be possessed by a demon. The community calls in an exorcist to free her from evil influence using an ancestral ritual. A police officer tries to counter local beliefs to save the young woman. Zalava is a debut feature of high-tension horror from scriptwriter turned director Arsalan Amiri. Questioning notions of the rational and the unreasoned, between modernity and superstition, he brings home to his viewers their own perceptions andjudgments while playing on their repressed fears.
