Three drops of water fall from the sky and bounce on the shoulder of Momo, who holds in her hand an unfinished letter written by her father, an oceanographer who has died atsea. This letter contains no more than the two words “Dear Momo”. After her husband’s death, Ikuko, Momo’s mother, decides to leave Tokyo with her daughter and move to Shio, the island where she was born situated in the inland Sea of Seto. The two women will stay at the home of Ikuko’s uncle’s and aunt, who are pleased to see a little new blood arrive on their island with its a geing population. Much toIkuko’s delight, the family home hasnot changed for years but for Momo this setting is a recipe for boredom, especially as she doesnot yet know anyone onthe island. However, strange creatures present in the house very quickly turn her daily life up side down
