The exceptional success of The Raid called attention to Indonesia as an action- lm-producing country. But The Raid was nothing new; it is part of a tradition of hundreds of crazy, zany action lm produced there since the early 1930s. Garuda dives deeply into this unique history – from 1930s martial arts films, to James Bond swinging 60s rip-o s to 70s super hero comic adaptations.
Meiresonne offers a fascinating and moving tribute to a people and their rich cinematic heritage, using rare footage and interviews with cult actors and directors. But he also launches a serious wake-up call to this vanishing tradition. After several golden ages, Indonesian action films are on a steep decline today.
