Julia Ducournau’s debut film begins like any classical post-adolescent chronicle: a student goes o to school and participates in hazing rites at a prestigious veterinary college. However, in Raw this means, above all, rupture, excess and catharsis. The student is a shy, ostensibly vegetarian, young woman, who quickly becomes obsessed with meat and finds herself guided by her sister on a path to cannibalism.
It has been a while since French cinema has come up with such a bold and daring plot. Raw is a funny, impertinent and provocative film that takes its audience out for a stroll before dumping them breathless back into their armchairs.
