The Woodcutter Story

Pepe, a woodcutter living in the depths ofFinland, has bad luck. Despite being struck by a series of misfortunes, he remains unfazed – as if the best (or the worst) were yet to corne. Selected for Cannes’ 2022 Critics’ Week, The Woodcutter Story is a mesmerizing first feature film. With its deadpan humor and array of colourful characters drawing comparisons by some critics to Kaurismaki, Lynch or Andersson, the director himself prefers to cite Kitano and Bresson as references for the sudden explosions of violence that erupt between moments of grace, making this atypical first film as intriguing as it is gripping.
