Will’s ex-wife and her husband invite him and their disbanded group of friends to their home, 3 years after a tragic accident. Mysteries prevail as to the motives for the dinner party, but the hosts’ beatific psycho-babble, no cell coverage and other clues indicate a violent turn of events to come.
And they do, but Kusama skilfully shifts things into a signi cantly di erent perspective during the last minute of the film, closer to a deeply disturbing afterthought, than the overused “twist” cliché that genre fans are conditioned to expect. The Invitation is a high-tension, horrific thriller, astute and subtle, rmly anchored in southern California’s dark mythology.
