The surfer Hinako is in the midst of a beautiful romance with the firefighter Minato, when he’s suddenly killed. The young woman is inconsolable. One day, the spirit of the deceased springs up in a glass of water.

Masaaki Yuasa, a director known for his totally wacky films, such as Mind Game and Genius Party, has this time created a work that is more accessible but no less commendable. Ride Your Wave is a magnificent fantasy romance in the tradition of Ghost bears witness to Japan’s unique savoir-faire in dealing with the delicate matters of death and mourning.
