Eduardo Casanova’s previous film Skins (produced by Alex de la lglesia), ushered in a new style defined by over-the-top extravagance, melodrama and willfully bad taste – an unholy union of Almodovar and John Waters, as it were. La Pietà follows the same vein, using a multitude of unsettling details to illustrate the taxie relationship that binds a controlling mother of fading beauty and her troubled son.
Casanova draws a parallel between this domestic tyranny and the dictatorship in North Korea. A bit out there? Absolutely, but that’s exactly what he’s going for, breaking the mould for bath style and substance.
