Paolo Strippoli’s film makes no secret ofits metaphorical nature. In a bleak version of Rome, where muted violence seems constantly on the verge ofbreaking out, a family is tearing apart. Since the mother’s death in a terrible accident, father and son are no longer communicating and their daily lives brim with tension. When it rains, people transform into murderous monsters.
Flowing strikes a fine balance between drama and horror, between deft character development and outbursts ofunbridled violence as an outlet for pent-up rage.
An intimate film, attesting that Italian genre cinema is back in full force.
