David a film archivist discovers from a grainy old film reel that his house was the scene of multiple murders in the early 1900s. Then the revelation of a secret shatters what he thought was a happy marriage. David reaches the breaking point when the house’s macabre history and the rage of the present blur in his mind and he slides into paranoia and insanity. The Canal is a visceral Irish ghost story but Kavanagh’s use of arresting imagery chilling score and a story told from the troubled viewpoint of its protagonist escalate it beyond the edge of the usual haunted house horror film.
