ROOM 237

Distribution: Wild Bunch Distribution

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick made Shining, which became an iconic horror classic. Both admired and despised, many critics hailed the film as a genre milestone whereas others saw it as a botched job by a legendary filmmaker who got lost along the way. But between these two poles, theories have emerged that Shining contains hidden messages that the film’s hard-core fans are convinced they have decrypted.

Room 237 mixes facts and fiction based on interviews with both fans and film specialists who are cryptic message believers, and through its brilliant and personalized editing, presents a new reading of the film.

Rodney Ascher’s previous documentary was The S from Hell, about the most terrifying logo in the world. Room 237 was selected for the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes.
