The only title sequence to credit Saul Bass as director is that of Phase IV, the work of the great graphic designer who revolutionised title sequences in the 1960s and who ventured into the director’s chair only once. Bass worked with the greats, Hitchcock, Preminger and Scorsese, creating the title sequences for Vertigo, The Man with the Golden Arm and Casino.
Phase IV is a sci-fi movie; a genre that gave him free rein to bring his personal obsessions, which vacillated between paranoia and mysticism, to the screen. His ambitious and metaphysical approach to Phase IV recalls that of Kubric, but with Hichcockian suspense . Phase IV is an oddity. A film with a 70s sensibility, but whose black mutant ants attest to a legacy from the 50s. Don’t miss this opportunity to see a rare classic in a fully restored format.
