How can the lighting in a film tell its story or move the audience? How does the lighting create a “hierarchy” of images? Why leave part of the scene in the shadow? How does one light a comedy, a film noir, a western or a horror film? These are questions that a DP must constantly address.
To imagine and construct the visual character of a film involves two separate acts: one technical and the other artistic. This is done by working in tight-knit artistic collaboration with the director, not to craft a beautiful image, but the “right” image, the ideal one the director has envisioned.
These are but a few of the issues to be explored by director of photography Gilles Arnaud.
