Harper, a law student, meets a thug called Johnny in a bar. Drunk, he tells him about his desire to avenge his mother, who, he says, is now in coma because of his stepfather. Johnny says he can help him, for a fee. The next day, the gangster runs his doorbell, accompanied by his stand-offish companion Cherry. Harper thinks of nothing else the carrying out his initial plan. This thriller directed by Christopher Smith features the young Tye Sheridan, whom we have already seen in Jeff Nichols’ Mud. The recurring split screen sharpens the storyline and gives the films new intensity. What is to be believed and who can one turn to ? These two films in one are just as much detours for the protagonist as for the audience, who are presented with several versions of the facts.
