Carlos tailors suits for the elite and butchers women with the same precision. He’s a cannibal and his meals are as solitary as his orderly life devoid of remorse. Then the twin of one of his victims turns up and like a ghostly double offers him redemption.
There are plenty of horrific scenes in Cannibal but the usual gorefest is kept off screen allowing a strong focus on character. De la Torre brilliantly conveys Carlos s complexity and solitude involving us with him throughout. The film may be minimalist but it is also sumptuously layered with light and shadow ancient church rituals and sweeping vistas of nature shrouding Cannibal and its monster with a deep sense of mystery.
