Vietnam 2030 : rising seas have forced the population to live in houseboats and rely on a depleting rich supply, while multinationals compete to set up floating vegetable farms. A young woman, Sao, believes one of them is linked to her husband’s murder.
“Nuoc” means water and rarely has it been so generously and lushly filmed, creating a glistening sea-world that subjugates every aspect of daily life, from the intimate, to finding nourishment, to burying the dead. Vietnam’s first venture into sci-fi cinema, 2030 is a dystopian portrait of the demise of life on land, based more than anticipatory fancy. Some predictions forecast the submergence of 50% of southern Vietnam’s farmland in less than 3 decades.
