A man, living under his exuberant wife’s thumb, persuades her to buy the piece of furniture of his choice: a large and grotesque glass coffee table. This almost innocuous decision proves devastating when the table becomes the cause of a serious domestic accident.
The Coffee Table follows the rationale of the predicted disaster. Caye Casas uses comedy to create a mind-numbing work featuring characters trapped in a drama that they try in vain to erase and put behind them. In this well-executed contained movie, the Spanish filmmaker redefines black humour and is at ease with sardonic laughter.
