Based on a tale by Hans Christian Anderson, The Red Shoes is an allegory on how art may eventually destroy life. Scorsese, Coppola and Romero all declared that their desire to become directors was intensified be seeing this film in their youth. For Scorsese it embodied the truest experience of the artist, the joy and pain of devoting yourself to a life of creation.
