Tobe Hooper’s first studio film, The Funhouse is a skilful followup to his unsurpassable masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An explicitly hallucinatory trip, peppered with deviant elements, this surreal ride in a theme park explores the monstrosity hidden in the recesses of the average American’s unconscious. Like many of Hooper’s works, the film did not achieve success and cult status until later on.
